Cross Country - Give it a go
The Cross Country League is represented by 13 clubs situated in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire all of which fight it out for a place in the National Final. The league takes place throughout October to February over 5 different courses.
You must wear a club colours, but what you wear with it is up to you and dependant on the weather e.g. gloves, thermals, long sleeved tee shirt, tracksters etc. Off road running shoes, studded trainers or xc spikes are are best to run in. The routes will be on grass, tracks, shingle paths, and mud but definitely no roads. Each race distance is approximately 4.5 to 5 miles. The beauty of cross country is that you are running for your club, how fast you go is irrelevant.  Placing is important right down to the last scorer in each of the teams.  You may be the 200th runner to finish, but if the runner behind you is the last scorer of his team then he will score 201, pushing up their points score.
If you have never run cross country before then you really must give it a go! I know that some people ran it at school and hated it but this is different. Yes it may well be cold. Yes is may well be wet. Yes it may well be muddy. But you have got to give it a go! Once you have run one you will definitely come back for more!  There is a great team spirit and you are not just running for yourself you are helping the team. There are free refreshments afterwards and you may be lucky to get a hot shower as well!
Before each race a sheet will be on Ron's desk asking for names of people going to that race.
Go on give it a go. For further details speak to your Club Captains Bill or Karen.
