Club Charity: Action For Children

Action for Children

Hi Striders,

Congratulations to Valerie for raising an amazing total of £3,000 for Autism Beds as the club charity , a fantastic total in such a tough year.

I’m delighted to say that at the AGM on 12th November, Action for Children was chosen as the new Stopsley Strider’s Charity of the Year. To be fair, it was the only charity nominated , so no competition .

As the Covid restrictions are likely to continue into next year at various levels, I will do my very best to arrange safe and enjoyable ways to fund raise. I know Stopsley Striders are lovely generous people and look forward to meeting up with you either in person or virtually on our fundraising ventures.

I’m running the London Marathon for Action for Children in October 2021 and have already completed my first marathon for them , the Virtual London Marathon .
I will be supported on my fundraising journey by Amanda , who is also running London, having been lucky enough to get a club place.

Why I chose to run my first marathon for Action for Children and nominated them for the club Charity :

Action for Children
is a national charity that supports children & families from before they are born until they are into their twenties.
Action for Children help disadvantaged children across the UK – through practical services and programmes that are proven to work.
Action for Children pride themselves in finding the best possible match between parents and children through fostering or adoption.

When I was 6 weeks old, I was adopted. I have always known that I am adopted, and have been fortunate to have a very good and caring up bringing, with two wonderful parents.
I am incredibly aware of the huge benefits and positive impact that adoption and fostering has on lives.

Action for Children intervene early to stop neglect and abuse.
They support young carers.
They make life better for children with disabilities.

As a nursery nurse, I have worked with children for almost 40 years. I’ve spent the last 21 years working in a pre – school, supporting children with additional needs and their families. I know that intervention by charities such as Action for Children can be positively life changing.

Action for Children steer young people away from trouble, into training and employment.
They influence policy and advocate for change.
Their 7,000 staff and volunteers run over 600 services; from family centres to intensive support services, youth work to residential care homes.
Together, they make a difference to the lives of 370,000 babies, children, teenagers, parents and carers every year. But their work depends on public support.

Without people’s generosity they simply wouldn’t be here. Without charitable financial support, the children and families they care for wouldn’t receive their help.

I’m a mum to 24 year old twins. My son works in a local primary school, he has Dyspraxia. My daughter works with adults who have additional and complex needs.

Action for Children is a terrific charity, and I share so many of their beliefs, values and experiences both personally and professionally.
Their help and support is incredibly important to so many people and communities.

I’m really looking forward to the year ahead and thank you for the opportunity to support Action for Children. Please look out for news of our events and fundraising ideas, l et’s hope we have lots of fun along the way.
